The species are small to medium sized; in the genus Molanna, the wings are very narrow with rounded apices, in Mollanodes they are somewhat wider. The larvae inhabit streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. They build characteristic portable cases of sand grains, which are cone shaped with flattened lateral flanges.
