Bryocamptus vejdovskyi
Bryocamptus vejdovskyi is a new species to Norway and has recently been recorded from two lakes in the eastern part of the country.
Key characteristics
Both the exopod and endopod in the first three legs of Bryocamptus vejdovskyi has three segments, while in the fourth leg, the exopod is 3-segmented and the endopod is 2-segmented. In the first leg, the endopod is slightly longer than the exopod, while it is shorter in the legs 2–4. The operculum has 7–12 strong spines. Its caudal ramus is longer than wide. While the terminal seta is developed, the inner terminal seta is very short. The antennule consists of eight segments.
Female: Length 0.64–0.80 mm
Male: Length 0.60–0.70 mm
Ecology and distribution
In Norway B. vejdovskyi has recently been recorded from two lakes, both situated in the east. The species seems to prefer oligotrophic and dystrophic habitats, while it is scarce in eutrophic waterbodies. It can be found in a wide specter of habitats (ponds, periodic and perennial small waterbodies, swamps, streams, benthic zone of brooks, caves and terrestrial soil habitats). B. vejdovskyi has a Palearctic and Nearctic distribution and is found both in the lowland as well as in high mountain areas.
