Cyclops vicinus
Cyclops vicinus may be underestimated because it is a winter form with diapause in summer. It may be mixed up with C. scutifer since in both species the last two thorax segments are strongly protruded and pointed.
Key characteristics
Its body is moderately slender, and based on morphologic criteria Cyclops vicinus may be mixed up with C. scutifer. In both species the last two thorax segments are strongly protruded and pointed. However the furca of C. vicinus is longer than in C. scutifer. The seta attached to the 1. basal segment in the 4. pair of legs is much thinner than in C. scutifer. Its colour varies, in some cases with a uniform whitish grey hue, in other cases tinged with brownish red or reddish yellow colours.
Female: Length 1.3–2.3 mm
Male: Length 1.3 mm
Ecology and distribution
This species is found in a limited number of localities and except for two in Sør-Trøndelag county, all are situated around Oslo. pH varies from 6.8 to 7.8 and conductivity from 8 to 27 mS/m. C. vicinus may be underestimated because it is a winter form with diapause in summer, and therefore only found in early spring and/or late autumn. According to the literature it may occur in a variety of localities.
