Chydorus latus is probably mixed up with its close relatives but it is usually larger, its carapace is somewhat thinner and more transparent and the shape of the postabdomen is comparatively longer and more slender. It has a scattered distribution in Norway.

Key characteristics

Chydorus latus is very close to both C. sphaericus and C. ovalis, but is usually larger. Its carapace is somewhat thinner and more transparent, with colours varying between brown and orange. The postabdomen is also very similar to that of C. sphaericus, but its shape is comparatively longer and more slender. The number of denticles in the postabdomen is 10–12 in C. latus, compared with 7–10 in C. sphaericus.

Female: Length 0.4–0.7 mm

Male: Length 0.4–0.5 mm

Ecology and distribution

C. latus is a littoral species which occurs in less than 2 % of the water bodies, and has a scattered distribution in Norway. The species is probably mixed up with C. sphaericus and C. ovalis, and the number of records may therefore be underestimated. It is found in water bodies of all sizes from sea level and up to 1233 m a.s.l. in a wide variety of substrates, with and without vegetation. pH and conductivity vary respectively between 4.5 and 7.5 and 0.4 to 42 mS/m.
